ChatGPT explains Technobiophilia to me but it’s not what I expected.

I invented the term ‘technobiophilia’ in my 2013 book ‘Technobiophilia: nature and cyberspace’. It was a clunky word but I couldn’t think of anything better. I defined it as the innate attraction to life and lifelike processes as they appear in technology. With all the attention around ChatGTP this week…

Bachelard’s Poetics of Space & the Umwelt of Cyberspace

My book ‘Hello World: travels in virtuality’ was published in 2004 That is an aeon ago in the history of digital culture. But I’m dipping into it 18 years later and finding a curious synergy with the preoccupations of the novel I’m writing now. ‘Hello World’ is not fiction, however, but a travel memoir telling the story of my early experiences…

A report from the online course ‘Kinship — an exploration into being together’

“An ecosystem is the embodiment of reciprocity. It consists of a multitude of beings related in endless ways. Ecological life is always lived in relationships with others.” Andreas Weber Earlier this year, I signed up for an online course as part of the research for my novel ‘The Fault in…

No wonder I sold so few copies of my book — the publisher made a mistake with the price.

Make sure your books are on sale for the correct price. — If you’re an author and it’s never occurred to you to check the pricing of your books — take a look and make sure it’s what you expect. The problem I’ve been a published author since 1992 but I’ve only just found out one of my titles has been on sale for…

This is a bit off-topic but your article reminded me of hearing a writer describe how, each time she was ready to start a new novel, she would paint the walls of her room a new colour to match the book. Must admit that I've never done it myself but I love the idea.

I have the audio feature on my PC laptop, and I love it! The best text-to-speech I've heard. However, it hasn't appeared on my Android phone. Will I get it on my phone in the future? I'd really like that.

6: Further towards connectedness 2004

Chapter 6 of my 2005 PhD Thesis ‘A Journey of Integration’ Further towards connectedness 2004 The experience of writing Hello World: travels in virtuality, which involved confronting what Arthur Kroker calls ‘the will to virtuality’¹ and beginning to understand its allure, has guided me away from any hope of early clarification and towards other…

Thanks for this great piece.

Thanks for this great piece. I totally feel your pain! I was in my early 40s when my first book came out, and since then I've regularly needed a profile photo (I'm 70 now). As it happens, my current Medium profile photo was taken by my grandson aged 8 and…

Thanks Gus.

Thanks Gus. In fact, I wrote 'Correspondence' 30 years ago this year! I should really celebrate that, if novels are allowed to have birthdays. That book was all about the direct relationship between humans and computers, though, and I had never been online when I wrote it. I'm grateful for that experience, and sometimes wonder if I would have responded differently to the internet had I not had that 1-1 with my computer before engaging with the 1-many of the internet. How about you? Can you remember your offline interactions with computers?
